  1. That thirty-minute Havana did not come from a tobacconist in Kenosha, that’s for sure.

  2. A stinkin’ Red!

Really, Welles was an overrated ham, though quite superior to the usual Ho-wood product. His Schackaspeare flicks however low budget still worth watching (papier mache Macbeth…whoa)

I think these photos are from when he was promoting a Shakespeare film, Chimes at Midnight.

Didn’t he try to fill in parts of his unfinished Merchant of Venice with puppets? The guy was determined, I’ll give him that.

  4. Ive watched a bit of Chimes, which was sort of a hodge-podge of various scenes from a few Ss plays–he does Falstaff mainly (Henry the V, etc).

OW’s Othello is creepily cool–much of it shot on a fortress in Morocco, or something. But he ran out of shekels as usual, so …abridged much.

Welles’s misfortunes were mainly due to …Hearst and his cronies, as you probably know. After Kane, Hearts more or less sent out the blacklist order on Welles (even tho Kane was due at least as much to Mankiewicz). I don’t think Welles was a bona fide socialist anyway–that was one of his hustles .
