This must have been for Hail Mary, which was a modern urban spin on the Virgin Mary legend. I thought it was a very touching film and not in any way blasphemous.
It was actually Detective that was premiering though Hail Mary appeared earlier in the year. The pie was thrown by the same dude who got Bill Gates in a similar manner. Godard thanked him for the tribute to silent cinema.
I’d love to find a site with pictures of all the stunts that were puled at Cannes in the 50s-early 60s to draw attention to films.
The Cannes official site used to have a great photo section on it (where I jacked most of the images for this feature from) but it seems to have been removed or wasn’t there last time I checked.
